Control Burn Guidelines
Open air burning in the Town of Rocky Mount is prohibited. If you have any questions, contact the Town at 540-483-5243.
Open air burning is allowed outside of the Town of Rocky Mount limits from 9:00 am to 12 midnight. You cannot add anything further to the fire after 9:00 pm. The fire must be fully extinguished by midnight. The fire must be attended at all times and you will need to have a water source close by. See County Code for the complete Code on Control Burning in the County. Please check the "News" section on our homepage for any current burn bans or restrictions.
Contact the county Fire Marshal’s office at 540-483-3091, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm with any questions.
You can submit an online Control Burn Notification Form for the County of Franklin.
Request Fire Report
If you would like to obtain a Fire Report from our Fire Marshal’s Office, please complete the online Fire Report Request. There is a $10.00 administrative fee for each Fire Report requested.

Franklin County Public Safety wants to ensure that every home in the County has a working smoke detector. Smoke detector availability is limited; if available, we will install them in the appropriate areas of your home free of charge.
If you are a tenant in need of a smoke detector, please notify your landlord of this requirement as soon as possible.
If you are a resident of the Town of Rocky Mount, Virginia, please contact the Town Managers office at 540-483-5243.
If you, a neighbor, or family members are without smoke detectors in your home and are a Franklin County, Virginia resident who owns and lives in the home as your primary residence, complete the Smoke Detector Installation Form.

The Knox Box Entry System Program is an effort by the Franklin County Public Safety to provide property owners within Franklin County, Virginia a secure system that provides rapid, nondestructive, emergency access to commercial buildings. A Knox Box is a secure key vault that is installed on the exterior of a building near the main entrance.
